The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has released a set of ten cybersecurity tips for small businesses. These tips are designed to help small businesses protect themselves from cyber-attacks.
FCC Tips
- Train employees in security principles. This includes teaching them about strong passwords, phishing scams, and other common cybersecurity threats.
- Protect information, computers, and networks from cyber-attacks. This means keeping software up to date, using firewall protection, and backing up data regularly.
- Provide firewall security for your Internet connection. This will help to prevent unauthorized access to your network.
- Create a mobile device action plan. This includes password-protecting devices, encrypting data, and installing security apps to protect from cyber-attacks.
- Make backup copies of essential business data and information. This will help to minimize the damage if your systems are hacked.
- Control physical access to your computers and create user accounts for each employee. This cybersecurity technique will help to prevent unauthorized access to your computers.
- Secure your Wi-Fi networks. This includes encrypting your network and hiding the network name.
- Employ best practices on payment cards. This includes using trusted payment processors and isolating payment systems from other systems.
- Limit employee access to data and information, and limit authority to install software. This will help to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive data.
- Use strong passwords and multifactor authentication. This will make it more difficult for hackers to gain access to your systems.
