The Des Moines, Iowa school system has called in its (unnamed) cyber insurer, the FBI and DHS after an apparent ransomware attack, which put 30,000 students out of school for two days.
While many students were doubtless thrilled to be at home with no access to online learning, the school district is responding as if the cause were a snowstorm.
“To make up for lost class time, the district is extending the school year through June 2,” reports the Des Moines Register.
At least four other Iowa schools have reported cyber attacks. The Glenwood Community School District paid hackers $10,000 to decrypt student data after a ransomware attack several years ago.
