NuHarbor Security, a managed security provider, has unveiled the second annual edition of the SLED Cybersecurity Priorities Report (CPR), shedding light on the often overlooked state, local, and education (SLED) organizations in the cybersecurity landscape. The report delves into the challenges and innovations within the SLED community.
This report features insights from interviews with prominent SLED IT leaders, including CIOs, CISOs, security directors, technology executives, and cybersecurity experts nationwide. It provides actionable insights and best practices for those serving constituents in colleges, counties, cities, and states.
The 2023-2024 SLED CPR explores key themes, including Whole-of-State cybersecurity frameworks, cybersecurity talent retention, and decision-making on cyber insurance. Notably, 37% of states experienced reduced cybersecurity funding, while 57% of leaders plan to offer or leverage Whole-of-State cybersecurity services. Hiring challenges in building security teams are highlighted by 71% of leaders, and 42% consider self-insuring against attacks instead of purchasing cyber insurance.
Cyber Insurance
In the realm of cyber insurance, the report delves into the considerations and trends within the SLED sector. Leaders are grappling with whether to self-insure or purchase cyber insurance, reflecting a strategic shift in approaching financial protection against cyber threats. This nuanced exploration adds depth to the report, providing a comprehensive understanding of the SLED community’s approach to managing cybersecurity risks, both operationally and financially. Noteable the report states, “Unfortunately, as attacks grow in frequency and impact, policy premiums are rising; at the same time, coverage is becoming more limited—or in some cases, simply unavailable.”
Justin Fimlaid, CEO and Founder of NuHarbor Security, emphasized the importance of continuing the conversation initiated by last year’s inaugural SLED CPR, underscoring the commitment to working with, serving, and learning from SLED organizations. “This latest edition signifies our continued commitment to working with, serving, and learning from SLED organizations,” said Fimlaid.
Jack Danahy, Vice President of Strategy and Innovation at NuHarbor Security, stressed the significance of focused discussions with SLED leaders, emphasizing that success lies in thoughtful strategies rather than shiny new cybersecurity tools. “In both last year’s research and this year’s report, it’s clear that success is less about shiny new cybersecurity tools and more about thoughtful strategies that are appropriate for this community to adopt as they address these unique challenges,” added Danahy.
