In a move sure to impact the cyber insurance and cybersecurity industries The National Security Agency (NSA) is creating a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Security Center. The center will aim to be a “whole-of-government effort in conjunction with the private sector.”
The new center was announced by NSA Director Gen. Paul Nakasone at a National Press Club Headliners Luncheon on Thursday and reported here.
The key takeaway for the cybersecurity and insurance realm is that the center will also work with the private sector to help businesses understand threats against their intellectual property and develop AI security solutions.
Nakasone said that AI has “enormous capacity to upend” various sectors of society, including militaries, economies, international relations, and technological growth. He said that it is “essential” for the U.S. to maintain its position as a world leader in the technology, not take that advantage for granted, and understand how its adversaries may use AI or prey on its vulnerabilities.
What will the NSA’s AI Security Center do?
- Developing best practices, guidelines, principles, evaluation methodology, and risk frameworks for AI security.
- Working with the private sector to help businesses understand cybersecurity threats against their intellectual property and develop AI security solutions.
- Monitoring and analyzing potential AI threats to the U.S.
- Developing new technologies to mitigate AI threats.
What does this mean for businesses and the public?
The creation of the NSA’s AI Security Center is news businesses and the public should follow. It indicates that the U.S. government is taking AI security seriously. The hope seems their efforts result in solutions to protect the nation, individuals, and businesses from AI threats.
