Deal Targets Middle-Market Cyber Risk
Markel is giving eligible U.S. cyber insurance policyholders access to Upfort Shield to curb common attacks. The package adds AI automation, monitoring, training, and endpoint detection and response. The insurer aims to cut claim frequency as carriers tighten renewal standards. Markel said eligible policyholders can activate the tools alongside their cyber insurance policy. The companies did not disclose financial terms.
“Markel’s relationship with Upfort helps strengthen our 360-degree approach to cyber insurance protection and ensures we are there for our clients before, during and after a cyber incident,” said Paul Melone, Executive Underwriting Officer, Professional Liability at Markel.
What The Cyber Insurance Policy Bundle Adds
Upfort Shield uses AI automation and multiple layers of defense. Upfort describes it as a multi-layer cyber defense system for small teams. The platform offers email protection, ongoing monitoring, and employee training. Markel policyholders can also use endpoint detection and response software, which relies on behavioral analytics to spot suspicious device activity. Upfort designed this software for easy setup with IT staff. Markel noted that service availability and pricing may differ for each policyholder.
“This collaboration aligns with Markel’s long-term cyber strategy to provide innovative insurance solutions for middle-market businesses,” said Raphael Da Costa, Senior Director, U.S. Cyber and Tech at Markel. “It allows us to broaden our appetite, helping our policyholders strengthen their risk prevention, and position ourselves to deliver customized cyber coverage as the market continues to mature.”
Data-Driven Underwriting Moves Closer
Markel executives tied the rollout to a long-term strategy for middle-market cyber coverage. The carrier wants earlier loss prevention and clearer control data for pricing cyber risk coverage. They expect security telemetry to shape renewals and cyber liability insurance terms. Insurers increasingly pair network security insurance with security services. Buyers also pair data breach insurance with lender and board demands. Markel did not disclose financial terms. Markel now calls the offer a core cyber insurance policy feature.
