Markel Insurance has named Jamie Smith as London Underwriting Manager – US Cyber Lead, effective immediately, enhancing its cyber insurance leadership. Smith will lead the US cyber segment of Markel’s London Market portfolio, focusing on underwriting and growth.
Smith will collaborate with actuarial teams on portfolio analysis, strategic planning, broker engagement, and policy improvements to support profitable growth. He will also work closely with Markel’s London Market claims team.
The cyber insurance market is expanding as digital risks rise, prompting insurers to invest in specialized underwriting talent. Markel’s appointment reflects ongoing competition for cyber expertise.

Focus On US Cyber Risk And Portfolio Strategy
Smith will lead the US cyber underwriting strategy for risks placed through the London Market, monitor claims trends to refine coverage, and identify business development opportunities with brokers and clients.
Markel expects Smith to support product development, working with clients to assess cyber threats and evolving coverage needs as the company refines its insurance offerings.
Smith will also mentor junior underwriters within Markel’s Cyber and Technology Professional Indemnity team. Through his guidance, Markel anticipates improvements in underwriting discipline and operational efficiency, enhancing the strength and capacity of its cyber team.
Smith will report to Dan Fox, Head of Cyber at Markel International. Fox emphasizes that cyber risk remains a top concern for businesses worldwide and notes that surveys consistently rank cyber threats among the most critical global business risks.

Smith brings over ten years of insurance experience focused on cyber risk and technology errors and omissions coverage.
Before joining Markel, Smith spent four years as a Senior Cyber Underwriter at Arch Insurance International. He also held underwriting roles at Barbican Insurance Group and CFC Underwriting.
He has managed cyber portfolios in the London Market, with experience in broker networks and cyber risk modeling.
Markel is tapping Smith’s expertise to drive expansion into the US Cyber and Technology Professional Indemnity market. The company is rapidly increasing its underwriting capacity to keep pace with surging cyber demand.
