OrthoVirginia Inc., with 105 surgeons across Virginia, was hit by Ryuk ransomware, which among other damage took down the practice’s database of X-rays. It took the organization 18 months to get back all its systems.
This report has interesting details on the response. Notable is the mention of conflicts between the company’s malpractice and cyber policies. “It’s also important to be sure insurance coverage is up-to-date and that funds can be accessed promptly. The company was initially pleased to discover that its malpractice insurance policy also included cyberattack protection, but that created conflicts with its primary cyber insurance provider. ‘There was a lot of finger-pointing and it wasn’t till this year that we got that straightened out,’ she said.”
