Deepfake Protection: Reality Defender’s API Now Available

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Deepfake Era Dawns

We are living in the dawn of the deepfake era. With some reporting fraud attempts using synthetic voices surging over 1,300% in just one year, the time to act is now. Facing this flood of fake reality, the aptly named Reality Defender launched a new public API and free developer tier, simplifying deepfake detection integration with just two lines of code. This API allows developers to embed enterprise-grade protection against deepfake fraud directly into their applications.

“By opening up access to our detection platform, we hope to help build a broader ecosystem of trust and safety, combatting deepfake fraud at scale,” said Alex Lisle, CTO of Reality Defender.

Immediate, Effective Protection

The new Reality Defender API uses a multi-model approach, featuring a context-aware detection model for advanced image analysis. It currently detects manipulated audio and images, with video detection capabilities arriving soon.

Integration is rapid and straightforward, as Lisle explains, “In terms of implementation, adding deepfake detection via API is just adding two lines of code in the way one would Twilio or Stripe.”

Companies Must Adopt a Proactive Mindset

Reality Defender emphasizes proactive measures as essential for companies confronting evolving deepfake threats. According to Lisle, “Companies first need to assess where they could be impacted by deepfakes — something no company is immune to — and address such potential points of failure accordingly. Some of this is education and training. Most of this involves proactive detection against such threats.”

Broad Industry Impact

The API serves numerous applications, such as OSINT research, financial security, and legal services. “OSINT research tools could implement deepfake detection via API (which is what we just announced). Trust and safety teams can also implement said API into their tools so that potentially deepfaked content is scanned at the point of upload and caught before it can do any damage,” notes Lisle.

Trusting Our Own Eyes is No Longer Enough

Deepfake technology has reached a level of sophistication that challenges conventional trust. Lisle stresses, “If our own PhDs can be fooled by the latest deepfakes — which we all have at one point or another, purely as part of routine internal tests — then, no, trusting your eyes and ears is no longer an option, and certainly not a scalable one. “

Protection for Vulnerable Individuals

Deepfake detection extends beyond corporate use. It significantly protects individuals from scams that are increasingly targeting vulnerable groups like the elderly. Lisle notes that if telecommunications firms scan, “we no longer need to worry about elderly parents getting calls with fake voices.”

Global Coordination Essential

Given the rise of deepfakes, or “sophisticated” impersonations, and the borderless reality of cybercrime, Lisle acknowledges the necessity for global cooperation and rules to manage deepfake misuse effectively.

“Countries around the world are already taking this seriously, but some governments are less proactive than others. Reacting to a deepfake after it has done damage is not acceptable… detecting at the point of entry or upload — via API — can grind such activity to a halt.”

Companies must proactively identify vulnerabilities, educate staff, and continuously update detection measures. Effective deepfake defense demands vigilance, technological sophistication, and coordinated efforts by governments and businesses worldwide.
