The world of cybersecurity—and the cyber insurance industry that supports it—often feels like a walled garden, accessible only to those fluent in a language of acronyms and technical jargon. Terms like DDoS, MFA, and EDR require yet another layer of decoding, leaving employees and everyday users to navigate complex security concepts with little guidance. This is more than an inconvenience; it’s a significant barrier to cyber resilience, particularly when human error remains the leading cause of cyber incidents.
To build a culture of cybersecurity, we need less jargon. We need clear, engaging communication that resonates with people where they are. Unfortunately, much of the industry still clings to “inside baseball” lingo, which only alienates those who most need to understand security principles. When the message gets lost in translation, so does the opportunity to strengthen defenses.
New Cybersecurity Podcast
That’s why we took notice when ESET announced its latest series of cybersecurity podcasts, Speakeasy Security. Co-hosted by ESET’s Tony Anscombe and Cysurance CEO Kirsten Bay, the show promises to break down complex cybersecurity issues and deliver insights in a more digestible format. The effort and the medium matter. The podcast medium has seen explosive growth in recent years. It offers a powerful way to meet audiences where they already are.
If cybersecurity and insurance professionals want to make a greater impact, they must prioritize clarity and accessibility and abandon the cybersecurity jargon. Threats are evolving, but so too must the way we communicate about them. The goal isn’t just to sound smart—it’s to make the world safer.
