Indian PM Cybercrime Collaboration Needed

Posted on September 5, 2023September 5, 2023 By Martin Hinton

In an exclusive interview with PTI, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for global collaboration to combat cybercrime, which he said is a “growing threat” to all countries.

Modi said that cybercrime can be used to fund terrorism, spread misinformation, and disrupt critical infrastructure.

“Cybercrime is a growing threat to all countries,” Modi said. “It can be used to fund terrorism, spread misinformation, and disrupt critical infrastructure. We need to work together to combat this threat.”

Indian PM Modi with President Biden

Modi said that India is committed to working with other countries to fight cybercrime. He said that India has established a National Cyber Security Coordinator’s Office and a National Cyber Security Agency to strengthen its capabilities in this area.

“We are also working to educate children about online safety,” Modi said. “We want to make sure that they are protected from online predators.”

Modi’s interview is a timely reminder of the importance of global collaboration to combat cybercrime. It is a complex and ever-evolving threat.

Types of cybercrime

Some of the specific types of cybercrime that Modi mentioned include:

  • Phishing: This is a type of social engineering attack where the attacker sends an email or text message that appears to be from a legitimate source, such as a bank or credit card company. The email or text message will often contain a link that, when clicked, will take the victim to a fake website that looks like the real website. Once the victim enters their personal information on the fake website, the attacker can steal it.
  • Ransomware: This is a type of malware that encrypts a victim’s files and demands a ransom payment in order to decrypt them. Ransomware attacks are often carried out through phishing emails or drive-by downloads.
  • Data breaches: This is a type of cybercrime where sensitive data, such as personal information or financial data, is stolen from a company or organization. Data breaches can occur due to a variety of factors, such as hacking, human error, or system vulnerabilities.

Combating cybercrime

There are a number of challenges to combating cybercrime, including:

  • The anonymity of the Internet: It can be difficult to track down and prosecute cybercriminals because they often operate anonymously online.
  • The lack of international cooperation: Cybercrime is a global problem, and it can be difficult to get all countries to cooperate in combating it.
  • The ever-evolving nature of cybercrime: Cybercriminals are constantly developing new ways to attack computer systems and networks.

How India is combating cybercrime

India is taking a number of steps to combat cybercrime, including:

  • Establishing a National Cyber Security Coordinator’s Office and a National Cyber Security Agency.
  • Creating a Cybercrime Reporting Portal.
  • Training law enforcement officers on cybercrime investigation.
  • Raising awareness about cybercrime among the public.

Tips for individuals and businesses

Here are some tips for individuals and companies to stay safe online:

  • Use strong passwords and change them regularly.
  • Be careful about what information you share online.
  • Be wary of emails and text messages from unknown senders.
  • Keep your software up to date.
  • Use a firewall and antivirus software.
  • Back up your data regularly.

Cyber Insurance

In addition to the tips mentioned above, businesses and individuals can also protect themselves from cybercrime by purchasing cyber insurance. Cyber insurance is a type of insurance that can help to cover the financial losses caused by a cyber attack. This can include the cost of restoring data, legal fees, notification of customers, credit monitoring, and ransom payments.

The cost of cyber insurance varies depending on the size of the business, the type of coverage, and the level of risk. It is important to shop around for cyber insurance and compare policies carefully. Cyber insurance is not a replacement for good cyber hygiene, but it can provide financial protection in the event of a cyber attack.
